The Calliope River bridge experienced significant problems with lateral movement under heavy vehicle loads. The movement was the direct result of the raked supporting piles which imparted a horizontal thrust under eccentric traffic loading. To resolve the problem, two vertical 1500 millimetre diameter bored piles and a new headstock were augmented into the existing bridge pier.
Bonacci Infrastructure provided the temporary works design and methodology for the construction of the 2.7 metre deep x 15 metre long concrete headstock which was completed in a single pour. The formwork spanned between the two bored piles which ultimately formed part of the permanent works.
