RAAF Base Amberley Stage 2

Bonacci Infrastructure delivered the design of the RAAF Base Amberley Stage 2 works, which included a 68 metre clear span hangar with three 10 tonne capacity cranes and a tail docking system, HQ and workshop annexes, a Logistics Management Unit (LMU) building and landside civil works.

Client: Australian Government - Department of Defence
Location: Amberley, Queensland, Australia

The hangar for the RAAF Base Amberley Stage 2 project was designed to suit the KC-30 air-to-air refuelling aircraft and the C-17 transport aircraft.  The works also included aircraft pavement design and pavements to suit 50 tonne, 60 tonne and 70 tonne tow tractors.

A fully braced structure was employed for the main hangar in lieu of sway frames. Exposed props were adopted to provide lateral support to the hangar door alcoves.

Bonacci Infrastructure’s design approach achieved an economical structural solution which adhered to strict limits on sway for crane operation when lifting critical aircraft components.   Careful attention was paid to steel detailing and construction staging which facilitated the efficient and safe erection of the hangar.
