The Virgin Satellite Infill and Regional Lounge project involved building in the centralised garden area of the terminal to afford greater floor space for travellers and working accommodation for staff. Brisbane Airport historically was located on salt-grass flats which were prone to seasonal high tide events. During construction in the mid 1980’s, the swamp land was surcharged and pre-loaded to minimise the impact of long-term settlements. As such, the structural solution for the project needed to accommodate the potential settlement characteristics of the site.
Bonacci Infrastructure used high level pad footings to support a composite steel / concrete flooring system. This solution was strategic in that it afforded a lighter structure which would be less prone to long-term settlement. Similar to the remainder of the existing terminal structure, the steel columns were augmented with low-level jacking points to permit future incremental jacking and floor levelling.
